Okay, I've plugged this computer directly into the DSL modem, thus bypassing
any possible permissions issues with the router. Same results.
Thus, having already
compared /etc/hosts, /etc/host.conf, /etc/hosts.deny, /etc/hosts.allow files
and having found them to be identical, I reason the problem is local to the
FC1 box.
I guess it's time to dig through IPTables.
(half an hour later)
Hmmm ... even disabling IPTables altogether & rebooting changes nothing. While
the other FC desktop (FC2) has some variations in its IPTable,
