I don't use DSL but it might be:

    wall
      |
      | phone line
      v
 [DSL "modem"]
      |
      | twisted-pair ethernet
      v
[computer, NIC]

and the computer uses standard DHCP to get a dynamic address. Might be
PPPoE, but I'd try plain old communications first. We Linux heretics often
get the "we don't support that" brush-off. Doesn't mean it can't be done,
however.
