That's one of the 'religious war' trip wires. I think the best way to look at
that is to note that good programmers can get either to do an awful lot. Bad
programmers can't. If you want, you can even use C from the commandline (see
man 'csh'). I don't think it is generally considered a particularly wise
thing to do ... but Linux will let you do it.
Just like Remington will let you blow your own leg off.
