Not sure about the SU2000, but most UPS will function even with dead
batteries. They won't take a load when the power fails, but you will see at
least some sign of life (usually a green "~" light, and possibly a red
battery light.
Don't waste your time or money on that one, scrap it and get a new one. $100
will buy you a decent (1200-1500VA) UPS from Sam's club or Circuit City.
