I did that, and even refined the search to see if that turned up
anything better suited for him. I looked at a lot of offerings. But
since this person is not very computer literate, we decided that the
simplest program that we could find that would fit his needs will save
him a lot of headaches, as well as myself. :) The frontends look simple
enough for me, but unless they pretty much hold your hand through the
setups for mysql or postgresql, and are extremely intuitive, I will be
driven crazy with phone calls asking how to do this or why didn't that
work. And if he spends more time sitting at a computer cursing instead
of working, his bookkeeping will stop right there. Not to mention what
the poor unsuspecting person that is his next customer will have to
endure after that ordeal unless he has plenty of time to cool off
beforehand. ;)

I am a big fan of open source, and push that point whenever
possible. But I also believe in using the right tool for the job at
hand. And, as much as I hate to admit it, Quickbooks fits his business
needs better than anything that I have looked at yet (essentially no
inventory, mostly just a/r, payroll, scheduling, and whatever equipment
that he has to keep track of). The contractor version is almost exactly
what he needs right out of the box. I have used Peachtree before, and
even as simple as that is, it is more complicated than what he needs to
be dealing with if that gives you an idea of what I am looking at. :)
Basically, it shouldn't have an icon or a button for anything that he
doesn't need or curiousity/not paying attention will soon do rear its
head and make trouble...guess who will get the first phone call when
that happens. :)

But I appreciate the input. Thanks.
    Jeff
