UNILEVER JOINS OPEN SOURCE BODY TO ADOPT LINUX OPERATING SYSTEM
Linux will help simplify Unilever's IT infrastructure

Unilever has become the first non-IT company to join the Open Source
Development Lab (OSDL). OSDL is the focal point for the development of the
Linux Operating System, influencing IT distributors and application
providers.

The OSDL's chief executive officer, Stuart Cohen, said: "Unilever is a
significant addition to OSDL’s membership and is the first of many global
corporations we expect to be joining us to contribute to improving Linux."

Linux will play a key part in the simplification of Unilever's IT
infrastructure. It will deliver improved technology focus and global
solutions of higher quality, with greater speed of implementation.
Operational and cost efficiencies will be maximised through increased server
utilisation and more simple change management. The gradual move will
eventually reduce IT equipment costs by over Euro10 million per year.

Martin Armitage, head of Unilever's Global Infrastructure Organisation
(GIO), said: "Along with many other global organisations, we must ensure
that our IT technology is compatible with more than one operating system.
With the adoption of Linux and working with our applications and business
colleagues, we will deliver a quality, lower cost, standard operating system
environment for Unilever."
