Looks like Stonebraker's product is based on the bsd licensed C-Store alpha code.
There are open source column dbms's around, like Metakit, Lucid db, and Monet
db. I have them up on the our website under sql databases on this page:
http://www.flalug.org/links.html
Those are optimized for read rather than write.
