You might want to take a look at Freeservers - you can actually get a
website for free ... as long as you are comfortable with a small amount
of space and bandwidth. And you can get s domain name that doesn't look
too clunky, too. They own some domain names like "8m.com" and "4m.com",
so when you tack on your chosen name you get things like a couple of my
sites - jsoftco.8m.com and fantasticstories.8m.com. Upgrades in space
and bandwidth can be had fairly cheaply - I am paying about $10/month
for one and still getting by for free on the other. They have various
file manager tools available for all the sites, or on the paid sites
just use FTP for maintenance.

Freeservers was independent when I started with them, now they are owned
by United Networks (the outfit that used to be Netzero and Juno).

If you want to "shop" more, just Google for "free web site" and you'll
find several others.
