Oddly enough . . . something relevant to this came up just yesterday for
me.
I've used a lot of banks over the years, including all three of the most
well-known banks in the US and close to a dozen local and semi-local
banks. Of all these, my all-time favorite has been Washington Mutual
(my current bank). I've never had customer service so good, I got free
checking with no trouble or jumping through hoops, and they don't charge
money for a bunch of ridiculous stuff like withdrawing money from an
ATM. There was just one problem: when I got my account last August,
their online banking didn't work without Internet Explorer on your
machine.
It was possible to use another browser to access the onling banking, but
first one had to visit the site once with IE to get an IE-specific
cookie on the site. Apparently, however, my complaints were addressed.
I tried the site again yesterday, and it works without IE now. I used
Firefox 1.5.0.3 on Debian Etch/Testing GNU/Linux, and it worked
perfectly.
I recommend Washington Mutual without hesitation. Go for it.
