Off the top of my head:
Xandros
MEPIS
Knoppix/Gnoppix/Kanotix
Ubuntu/Kubuntu
Damn Small Linux
Zen Linux
BeatriX
I seem to remember seeing a list of active Debian-based distributions
that was about 200+ items long. Granted, several were Knoppix
variations, and there was some other borderline redundancy, but there
are (last I checked) more active Debian variations than there are
distros that are not descended from Debian.
The Debian project is anything but becoming irrelevant. The more
well-known an end-user toy based on Debian becomes, the more relevant
Debian itself becomes. The project gets bigger, gaining in developers,
maintainers, and users, every year. While it has lost comparative
market share to Ubuntu, that's due to Ubuntu's meteoric rise in
popularity, and not to any loss in popularity for Debian.
For the first time, Debian is being widely regarded by proprietary
software vendors in the US as an "enterprise Linux" alongside the
flagship from Red Hat (as is SuSE Linux Enterprise Server). For
example, have a look at the distributions that are the focus of
Linux.com, HP, SerNet, and other notable supporters of enterprise Linux
solutions. Find me a webhost that offers a choice of distros for which
Debian isn't one of the options, and you'll show me you spend way too
much time on the Internet researching stupid challenges like this.
Yeah, I agree: Debian is anything but waning in relevance.
