To expand on my statements above, consider this:

Our high-volume, customer-facing web server is currently meeting the
magical "5-nines" for uptime. Ditto our mail server, ftp server, IDS,
Intranet web server, well, you get the picture. I had 5-nines on the
proxy server, too, until a RAID controller failure a few months ago.

All of the above systems run Debian Linux.

Not bad for a "hobby" O/S...
