"As someone who believed that the Apple OS x86 could gravitate toward
the PC rather than Windows toward the Mac, I have to be realistic. It
boils down to the add-ons. Linux on the desktop never caught on because
too many devices don't run on that OS. It takes only one favorite gizmo
or program to stop a user from changing. Chat rooms are filled with the
likes of "How do I get my DVD burner to run on Linux?" This would get
old fast at Apple."
About the Linux mention, I believe he may be right on that...
I think it's why I have had such a hard time switching over to
Linux...only it's not a gadget or gizmo...it's been software.
Particularly in my case...News Readers.
Under XP I use SharpReader...and I've just discovered that there is only
one feature about it that puts it above all the others for me...
I can delete the individual items in a feed and the program will not
download those items again, but will keep the ones I haven't deleted.
When I first was making a serious effort to switch over I could not find
a NewsReader for Linux that would do that...
This lead to a good six month delay from switching over that one issue!
(stupid I know, but hey)
Only recently did I discover that none of the other Windows-based
readers I tried would allow me to do that either!
I stopped being so critical of the Linux based readers and realized they
were actually very good.
I'm in the midst of my umpteenth push to switch, but I think this will
be the last as I have the same feeling about it as I did when I quit
smoking!...LOL
What sparked it was a discussion...actually one comment...in a forum
about DRM and what's coming down the road from Intel and MS...it was
something to the effect that your video card, sound card, (insert
peripheral here)...was going to have to ask permission from the OS
(Windows) to play the file in question...
That was the last straw, abandon ship.
