I know some people have a cron job that runs emerge to update the system
overnight. If that has emerged the new GCC 3.4 or you have switched it
yourself the system/apps are possibly unstable. Apparently the current
wisdom (explained in links) for rebuilding a proper (clean) toolchain and
world is:
emerge -e system
emerge -e system
emerge -e world
emerge -e world
If that seems like too much time you have several (officially unsupported)
options:
emwrap.sh
emwrap
tcupdate
