OK, I greatly reduced the noise by removing a superfluous audio extension
cord (it was necessary with the previous speakers, which had a shorter
cord). Apparently it had a bad ground conductor. Its end nearer the
computer has had stuff set on it; I can most likely cut a few feet off,
replace the end, and it'll be OK.
