I've run TCP on PPP (or SLIP, I forget) over a null modem between a Mac and
a Linux box (I had no NICs at that time), but that's not what you asked.

If one end runs pppd, then it should work if the other end pretends it's a
straight PPP connection (no modem) or dialup with the modem already
connected, or manual everything (for which the user does nothing).

There's some facility for routing. Never used it, don't trust MickeySoft
not to mess it up.
