[flalug] exim won't send from mutt

I'm running into a bit of an issue here with email.

I've migrated an email account (the one that gets email from this list,
actually) from Thunderbird to mutt. I've got mutt working beautifully with
fetchmail delivering mail through exim after retrieving it from the POP
server where my account is hosted. That's great.

I can't send email, though.

This is a Debian Sarge/Testing system with kernel 2.6.8 running mutt 5.6.1
and exim 4.44 (basically because exim was isntalled by default with Debian).
When I try to send email from mutt, it goes to exim, which then attempts to
send it, and it bounces as though the SMTP server doesn't exist.

I do have a router-firewall in place on this network, but it's certainly not
blocking outbound email traffic (considering I'm sending this email from
Thunderbird on the same machine where I'm trying to configure exim).

The text of /etc/exim4/update-exim4.conf.conf (the configuration file for
exim on Debian, apparently) is as follows:

dc_eximconfig_configtype='smarthost'
dc_other_hostnames=''
dc_local_interfaces='127.0.0.1'
dc_readhost=''
dc_relay_domains=''
dc_minimaldns='false'
dc_relay_nets=''
dc_smarthost='www.apotheon.com'
CFILEMODE='644'
dc_use_split_config='false'
dc_hide_mailname='false'
dc_mailname_in_oh='true'

I'm kind of at a loss, here. What am I doing wrong? The man pages aren't
helping much, and I can't even locate an instance of someone else having
this problem through google.
