ALL OF THIS IS MY OPINION. Others will have their own opinions, which of
course are equally as valid.
Hi Chris,
If I read you correctly, you're referencing 2 different splits. My
understanding is the SLUG/FlaLUG split occurred because SLUG was too
restrictive about their email lists, so FlaLUG formed to have less
restrictive lists. My understanding is that SLUG would not allow job postings
on the main list. I know of no troll involved in the SLUG/FlaLUG split.
In the LEAP/GoLUG split, GoLUG split off because LEAP wasn't restrictive
enough. LEAP failed to enforce their own mailing list rules, resulting in
frequent nasty flame wars. There was a troll involved, but he was a symptom
-- the disease was that LEAP would not enforce their own mailing list rules.
One point I'd like to make is even though FlaLUG forked to create a more
permissive list, and GoLUG forked to create a less permissive list, the
FlaLUG and GoLUG lists are very similar -- we both welcome job postings, they
both have high signal to noise, and neither has nasty flame wars.
