It was something I caught the tail of on the radio...
Scholarly types whining about the quality of the
content or something....:)
Open source knowledge is a great idea I
think...but it seems it will always be open to
this sort of criticism...
I'd lump it in there with the "criticism is the
'best' form of flattery" thing....
I also like that aspect of it in that it leaves
room for commercial products. They can claim some
sort of specialized knowledge or quality to their
product that the open source (wiki being editable
by anyone I guess) can't match in every instance...
But the sheer volume of potential open source
knowledge, no comercial product can touch, I would
think.
And if open source software is any indication,
open source knowledge can certainly match and
exceed commecial alternatives.
I think the academics are just now beginning to
realize this and are on the defensive, hence the
criticism perhaps.
Whenever I've had the ocassion to use a wiki I've
been pleased with it and it's quality. But then I
realize that the quality is going to vary....:)
So, being that Wiki is his baby, I'm curious as to
his (or her) thoughts on that aspect of it (the
qulaity issue).
I believe it will play outin a way similar to
Linux distros....if their good they survive and
gain momentum, if not so good, they fade...just
like most things in nature...:)
