Adding to Eben's comments, if you want to use the keyboard to FULL extent,
consider using UMENU/EMDL:

UMENU works well with these window managers: Icewm, Sawfish, Gnome, KDE,
Enlightenment, fvwm2, and Fluxbox. It might work with others, but I've gotten
it to work with those.
