One of my previous jobs was running a shipping department. I have seen how UPS
handles packages firsthand. You would be hard pressed to convince me that UPS
was entirely innocent in that instance.

We had a package returned once because of damage similar to that. UPS insisted
that it was not their fault, but that it wasn't packaged properly. The box
had tire tracks on it where they had dropped it and ran over it with a
forklift. The box contained parts for an industrial air conditioner... an 8"
long stainless steel tube that was 1 1/2" diameter with 1/8" wall thickness,
surrounded with an aluminum sleeve. Both parts were mashed nearly flat. Let's
see... box was rated at 140 lb burst... forklift weighs ~3000 lbs... yep, it
wasn't properly packed or it would have withstood that no problem. ;) Things
like that were a regular occurrence, at least one demolished package out of
every 300 or so packages sent. And heaven help you if the package had to go
through customs. If the package arrives without major damage, odds are still
good that they did not put all of the items back in the package after
inspection.
