No, mine worked fine after stopping the service while I had it in. I don't
know at this point. I'm playing around with FreeBSD today so I'll keep
looking around.

I did "service vmware stop", and brought eth0 down/up, and that didn't
work (unless VMware messes it up so badly that I have to take more drastic
measures to restore it). After that, my routing table looks like this:
