Do I detect VMWare? (vmnet8) Is it possibly the virtual network bridge? I
had that installed for about a day before I yanked it back out because it
completly hosed my networking.

I'm seeing a lot of odd network behaviour with VMWare on google but not your
specific problem.

Everything works but TCP. Maybe some piece of PAM? ... I just tried
booting single-user mode. (No PAM.) I brought up eth0. Ping, but no
lynx. Sigh.
