Some years ago I wrote Steve looking for a Linux adaptation of his excellent
HD utility, Spinrite. At the time he said "blow it out your ear" -- or words
to that general effect.
Now look at the tune he's belting out.

"Linux and Open Source Software
The second most often asked question surrounds my intentions for this work is
it relates to the growing Linux and Open Source Software (OSS) movement.
Here's a sampling of what's been asked:
I read with great interest your page on the technology underlying ClearType.
I'm a Mac/Win32/Unix programmer who is very interested in developing this for
the MacOS, and perhaps for Linux as well. Please contact me if you are
interested in sharing your source code, or otherwise having a collaborator in
this project.
I would like you to consider porting the ClearType technology to Linux under
GPL. The Open Source community needs people like you to participate.
What about a linux version of your cleartype software?
Is there any possibility of having Free&Clear for Linux (well, XFree86)?
You should put the pixel smoothing out there for Linux too.
Since you have already made it Freeware, how about an Open Source release of
Free&Clear? You get a lot of fans from the Linux camp that way.
Okay . . .
At the risk of annoying some folks by getting a bit "off topic" here, let me
mention that I'm very excited by what Linux and Open Source Software means to
the personal computing industry. So much so, in fact, that I've been wanting
to assemble a page that would be similar to my "Inside ClearType" page. Such
a page's title would be: "After Microsoft". If you would be interested in
knowing when such a page exists here (it will exist before long) please join
my eMail Notification System and check the "Steve's Occasional PC
Commentaries" topic checkbox. I'll let you know when "After Microsoft" is
ready for you.
If you're curious to know more
about Open Source Software:

http://www.opensource.org/halloween1.html

In the meantime, in the spirit of Open Source Software (which I firmly believe
is the entire future of computing), The Turning Theory into Practice page
shares absolutely every detail of the implementation of high-quality text and
graphics rendering using sub-pixel technology. It contains examples, samples,
explanation, and everything that any developer will require to produce their
own high-quality font rendering system."
And hey ... Spinrite 6.0 works on Linux. :-)

BTW, what is the name of the firewall he used to have available on grc.com? I
just found out I have a nephew running Win95 on a laptop so I gave him a
"Dutch Uncle" talk about firewalls and Windows absolute reliance on them. But
then, when I went to grc.com to download a copy of the firewall for the kid,
I couldn't find it.
