This might come across well received here. I am an administrator for a
small office in Tampa. We have about 10 users that worked paper before I
arrived a year ago. Only admin had 3 Windows boxes and an NT server
running. I had everyone set up on RH9 and am slowly removing M$ boxes.
(they didn't have licenses for half of them anyway) I'm now down to two M$
machines. So anyway ... since most of the users are new to computers I was
pleasantly surprised to see them working away quite naturally. (I run the
office work on a php/mysql/apache app so they primarily use Mozilla Firefox
and Thunderbird for e-mail) One of the few M$ machines left were at the
receptionist's desk and she was downsized a few weeks ago. We moved one of
the employees on an RH box up to the front desk and had her using IE on 98.
She lasted about 3 days before she complained about how she misses her
Linux. =) Ever evolving...
One gripe though I have to throw out there... All these M$ only web
developers can *%&$# my %^%@#!&. We conduct about 15% of our work over the
Internet and about 50% of that work requires someone to have to go to the M$
box in the hallway to be able to traverse the site (java applets etc). 90%
of those are government sites too. OUR government! Unfortunately,
government is this slow moving bureaucratic sludge that is nearly impossible
to receive cooperation from. They would just as soon have everyone on M$.
Can we say open standards development?
